First of all, as a Valentine’s weekend treat I took Tamsin to see the San Diego 7s tournament. It was strange to see Americans walking around in All Black jerseys.
Mexico, in white, take on Scotland. The Mexican team consists of the President of the Mexican Rugby Football Union, two of his sons and 4 guys who tried to jump the border that morning and were given the choice of playing rugby or getting sent back. Two of the guys didn’t even know you could use your hands.
Before the start of the South Africa/New Zealand quarter final, which New Zealand lost. Just looking at this picture should settle the debate for all the agnostics out there.
NZ get revenge for a loss to Kenya early in the tournament by winning the Plate final. There were hundreds and hundreds of Kenyans there and they all seemed to know the referee and that his parents weren’t married when he was born.
We went to zoo (again) at some point.
There are quite a few hummingbirds buzzing around San Diego, raining terror down from the skies like tiny fluorescent ninjas. I’ve been trying to get a photo of one since we got here but they have evaded me. Until now.
We’ve been up to Long Beach a couple of times lately. The first was to go and see a comedian, Joel McHale. He has a TV programme which involves making fun of stupid people on stupid TV shows which happens to be one of my hobbies. While we were up there we stayed in Newport Beach, which is a nice little city in Orange County just north of Laguna Beach for anyone who watches MTV.
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love motorsport, so we also went up to see the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach about a month back. We got there early so we had time to walk around the lifestyle expo and see teenage boys and middle-aged Asian men get photos taken with the car sluts working the booths. We also got a free bottle of hot sauce so in our minds even though the day was still young the trip was already worthwhile. We wandered about and looked at cars that were shiny but seeing as neither of us know anything about cars it was all a little bit lost on us. Despite the fact that we aren’t interested in cars or racing for the most part, the race itself was good fun. I never understood why people paid to see cars go past every couple of minutes, but the cars are so much faster than you can appreciate watching on TV. They’re also so loud thats there’s a real visceral component to being there that probably appeals to some ancient reptilian part of the brain, which is good because there were a lot of people there who didn’t seem to possess much more than that in the old thinking box. There were about 200,000 people there but you wouldn’t really know it as we had no problem getting in or out of Long Beach.
The electic Tesla, which I’ve heard described as a $30,000 dollar car with a $150,000 pricetag. Good for the environment though.
The Aptera, another electric car, which is due to be released later this year.
Surely someone’s idea of a joke.
One of the drivers spots a free car park which causes a pileup as the drivers behind were not obeying the two second rule.
Our most celebrity sighting so far – Ashley Judd. Star of such films as “That One with Tommy Lee Jones” and “The One Where Samuel L. Jackson Kills Some Rednecks”. I think. Anyway, I told her I was a fan of her work and she said she was a fan of mine and we had nice chat. Super lady. Her husband Dario Franchitti (from Scotland) won the race. New Zealand’s own Scott Dixon came in 15th or something.
Me eating shrimp at Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Shack.
I retired from fishing about a dozen years ago, mainly due to trips that were supposed to last for a couple of hours resulting in me returning to find out I’d missed an entire term of school. There are quite a few boats that go out every day from San Diego and they run to a schedule, so I thought we might give it a try. A couple of weeks ago we left the harbour at 6am to head down off the coast of Mexico and take some of their fish. Eduardo and Bea, who we went to Guatemala with came too. We were quite lucky as our boat which could hold up to 50 only had 15 people on it. I think the boat’s tally for the day was 75 barracuda, 3 kingfish and 5 rockfish. My tally for the day was 1 barracuda, 1 poisonous sculpin and 2 seabirds. Tamsin caught a few barracuda but didn’t fare much better. Eduardo caught a nice sized fish which they called a snapper but wasn’t really. Anyway, we had a nice day getting sunburnt and isn’t that what its all about? Eduardo and Bea had never been fishing before so they were just happy to catch anything.
The early morning San Diego skyline
A few sealions hanging about the live bait receiver
Some yachts outside the harbour. The island in the distance is where we were fishing.
Bea, Tamsin (with her brand new Bubba Gump Shrimp Company hat) and me (yawning).
Finally, we have just returned from two weeks in New Zealand for graduation which was thrilling. It was typical Dunedin winter weather and I caught the swine flu from standing in the cold posing for photos. Here we are walking across the stage.
